THE NOYES ARTS GARAGE OF STOCKTON COLLEGE
To Host Opening Reception for the “Ascending Beauty Series,” by Glynnis Reed During February’s Second Friday
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – The Noyes arts Garage of Stockton College will host a Meet the Artist Reception for Glynnis Reed from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Friday, February 13. Reed’s “Ascending Beauty Series” will be on display in the Atlantic City Gallery, at the Arts Garage, from February 5 until March 6. The reception, which coincides with the Garage’s Second Friday event, will include live music performed by Dynasty Marie, along with refreshments provided by The Iron Room.
Reed creates her work using mixed media, photography, and painting, as it reflects her diversity in imagery. Her technique draws influences from Baroque painting, magical realism and medieval religious art, which express her interest in, and explorations of, “wild natural environments,” urban landscape, and where the two meet. Her interjection of the human form in her digital photo and mixed media collages creates an internal complexity of human interactions.
Her “Ascending Beauty Series” is a collection of Reed’s portraits of African American women. The models—family members, close friends and women Glynnis has admired from afar—have played an important role in her life. To quote the artist on this series, “An exquisite beauty radiates from each of these women. They are self-possessed, projecting a daring aura of eroticism, splendid angelic countenances, and a striking expression of female masculinity . . .”
Reed is a graduate of the University of California, where she received her MFA in Studio Art. She was born in Los Angeles, California, and currently works and lives in South Jersey. Reed’s work has been exhibited in local, national and international venues. In 2011, to promote international and interdisciplinary exchange, Reed participated
in an international artist-in-residency-program for emerging artists from all over the world, at AIR Krems in Krems, Austria. While in Austria, she had a solo exhibit of her work at the Kunstraum Arcade Gallery in Moedling. Reed is a recipient of the “Visions from the New California” award which granted her a residency at Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Northern California. Currently, her artwork has been assembled for a twenty year retrospective exhibit at the Atlantic Cape Community College Art Gallery in Mays Landing, NJ.
Reed takes pride in teaching art at the Texas Avenue School in Atlantic City. She has students participating in the Links 46th Annual Black History Month Art Exhibit “Eat Smart; Be Active; Get Healthy” Poster Contest. At 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 14, artist Ted Ellis will present the Awards to the Outstanding Student Artists.
